The Cost of Freedom

Memorial Day was established in 1869 in remembrance of soldiers who died in the Civil War (approximately 620,000). For the past 145 years, our nation has set aside this day to pay homage to American patriots who have fallen in service to our country.

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember that freedom comes at a great cost, and throughout history-on land, in the air, and in seas and oceans around the world-American military personnel have stood tall to oppose the enemies of freedom, to defend our liberty and uphold the promise of our democracy.

As Rio Ranchoans, we remember both past and present armed forces personnel and their families, and honor and respect the ultimate sacrifices that have been made to ensure peace, prosperity and independence.
